Graduated in Design from ISIA University in Florence, Cosma Frascina is a designer who finds inspiration in the roughness of nature and artisanal techniques. The Italian designer is most interested in sculpting objects using calcarenite and bioclastic limestones and traditional techniques, but with an experimental approach to each piece. A block of tufo, gifted to him years ago by an acquaintance, caught Cosma’s attention, leading him to start working with it. The limestone became the artist’s preferred material. Now in Milan, bereft of this material, Cosma seeks its textures in cement and natural pigments, experimenting with new techniques.

Cosma Frascina finds his main inspiration in the roughness of nature, particularly in contrast with humans artifacts. Cosma likes not to determinate too much before starting creating, to be as free as possible in the making. His design is concretized through the voice of hands, which is inherently imperfect. As a medium to find the pureness of this life he goes by upending traditional notions of beauty and comfort/functionality.

The manifestation of time on natural resources is pivotal in Cosma’s practice: nothing is static, none of his creations are eternally one, they are caressed, shaped, plastered by time. Cosma, dismissing the current hyper-frenzied rate of cultural production, enjoys working at a slow pace in order to filter meaning and pureness in the abundance of stimuli brought about by the ubiquity of media content. He chases that dopamine input through handwork: sculpting, carving, sanding grant an illusionary abstraction from reality, a suspension from judgment.
