Martha Sturdy
My work is not for thinking about a specific environment, it’s about being witness to the emotive impact of nature’s balanced composition.
With an international reputation as a leading designer of furniture and home accessories, Martha Sturdy is known for creating distinctive artwork that is bold, sophisticated and minimal. Over the last three decades, Martha has created oversized statements using materials such as resin, leather, steel and brass. Martha has always been enthralled with the scale of nature on the West Coast. Never delicate, but always pared down, her work finds a balance in its weightiness and a resolve in its proportion. Each piece is an investment in aesthetic and function.
Martha Sturdy started She received her BFA at the Emily Carr University, where she was later granted an Honorary Doctor of Letters in 2006. Since her emergence in the 1980s, Martha has blended the concerns and methods of conceptual and contemporary sculpture with those of Suprematism to create her own unique iconography and often interstitial art + design practice. Her work explores contemporary interest in pure environments, by implying natural scale and economy to replicate the spatial experience of the untouched outdoors.
Through the span of Martha Sturdy career as a sculptor her work has remained focused on natural monumentality and resolved, balanced composition to the intent of reflecting anew the proportions of our environment. Martha Sturdy Pacific Northwest upbringing is firmly rooted in her themes, who has spent most of her life inspired by the nature that surrounds her. This closeness to nature has become a vital part of her work and has gone on to inspire most of her forms, using a mixture of wood, steel, and brass as a tool to explore nature and the human form. She believes that creativity and beauty should be evident in everything we do, and that a well-articulated space supports both peace of mind and peace in general.
