South Korean design studio Labotory designed Saem Cafe in Sejong City, South Korea, to be used by civil servants working nearby, so it needed a clean and warm atmosphere. Therefore, Labotory wanted to design the space as a quiet but solid space. Danyang Sosuwon Garden, one of the three largest gardens in Korea, presents a peaceful and intense space with broad light, like a love room welcoming guests.
The personality of Saem Cafe can be expressed in proportions. It is also proportional to the elements that can even seal off the middle function of the cafe during the day. The design is rooted in a sense of proportion, showing a more serious and stable structure compared to the space that draws attention from deformation. In addition, the identity of Saem Cafe is represented by the fact that the interior structure is not shown, but rather in the form of burlap hanging at regular intervals to express its personality.
Labotory wanted to create the welcoming atmosphere of Saem Cafe by arranging small and large elements, such as the horizontal lines of the ridge, the ambiguity between the internal and external boundaries, the trees and stones that form the pillars, the rough surfaces of granite and the fine Windows and paper. Labotori wanted to use traditional Korean gardens, clean structures and natural colors to create the atmosphere of Saem Cafe. They wanted to express the space as a quiet landscape with a structure that has the comfort and stability of a natural finished effect.
