Bendalong Beach House is the home of a retired couple on Sydney's south coast. This is a popular, casual beach house that respects the laid-back, natural atmosphere of the community. Madeleine Blanchfield Architects created a key link between interior and exterior, simplifying the house's conditions and making it a welcoming and approachable place for visiting family and friends.
Bentalong Beach House was built by Sanders Construction Projects and is located in the bush. It was necessary to consider allowing the house to "breathe" with its site, and the resulting structure naturally reflects the landscape in which it sits. The connection to the surrounding garden and landscape elements adds form to the house while also providing the vegetation needed to clear these areas. In response to the beach houses built by many owners in the area, the house is presented as a single-storey home that is intentionally, simply and comfortably situated in the streetscape.
A humble single-story living pavilion on the street side borrows from the simple style of the surrounding beach villas, many of which have been built by their owners over the years. The connection between the garden and the landscape is essential in the design. As a home for her parents, Madeleine Blanchfield wanted to create a home of calm and recovery, while expanding and contracting as needed. Key to this is the flexibility of planning the house and giving it the ability to divide smaller areas into a larger whole.
