Born in Madrid in 1958, Mecedes Vicente is an outstanding multidisciplinary artist who regularly participates in exhibitions around the world and is currently working with textiles and wood. He has also gained international recognition in the field of artistic creation with textile materials. The Mercedes Vicente took her painting technique and sculpts it improvised shapes with spiral twisted ribbons of fabric that look like whims of Nature.

Initially Mercedes Vicente works were pictorial, before evolving into sculpture, with canvas as her primary medium.“When I started using this technique, I realised that people were amazed by such a manual process,”she says.“Then I started to think that what I was doing was within the realms of craftsmanship, art and design.”She chose fabric in part because it was easy to get hold of, since a member of her family worked in a factory producing canvas. However she also loved the elastic, organic, flexible and translucent properties of fabric.

Throughout her career she has specialized in the search for forms that combine complexity and simplicity. Her creations evoke natural and geometric patterns found both in the basic forms of human creation and in the natural environment that surrounds us. At the same time, his works reveal an underlying order, based on mathematical and physical principles, which adds a conceptual depth to his work.
