The weave exists only in the way between the warp and the weft,A loom is essentially a piece of canvas,You're just working in a linear fashion.

Montana-based artist Mimi Jung is known for creating dreamy woven pieces that feel at once intimate and expansive, serenely still yet potentially kinetic. She experiments with new, intricate techniques while exploring deeply personal, broadly resonant experiences through her work. She will mount her first museum solo exhibition at Missoula Art Museum in 2024.

Using natural fibers, and more recently synthetics, lanyards and metal casts, she weaves vivid gradients that ebb and flow between different levels of color and translucency. Throughout, Jung’s weavings remained a personal endeavor. Through a new body of deeply personal fiber-based works that harness the emotive power of elliptical shapes, the artist poignantly meditates on an epiphanic period that redefined her approach to kinship. Each piece is at once infinite and intimate—much like the intense feelings and psychic landscapes they evoke.

Mimi Jung's work examines multiple dimensions of self-preservation, particularly as it relates to private and public self-representation, and the ways in which those depictions are manifest through social and cultural mores. Her constructed forms, with their voids and translucencies, are fixed but never static; the viewer actively controls the experience of transit around and through them—reflecting inward on their own behaviors. In the end, Jung’s limning of space is reflexive, visible to those who are predisposed to see it.
