The New Materials Institute is a design firm founded in 2008 by contemporary artists Hiroshi Sugimoto and Tomoyuki Sakakida. Contrary to its name, the Institute for New Materials studies materials and technologies used in ancient, medieval and early modern times and works on their modern reinterpretation and revival.
