Scott Mitchell designed an eye-catching, streamlined beachfront home for real estate expert Kurt Rappaport and his fiancee Sarah Mutch in Malibu, California. Elemental, raw and monastic in its rigor, this linear house overlooks the Pacific and is concealed by a bluff from the busy coast highway. Board-formed concrete, wood and glass are used consistently throughout, and steel beams embedded in the roof plane support the weight of plantings over long spans while bracing the piers.
The central axis extends 250 feet from the garage at the east end to the master suite at the west, bringing a spatial drama to the succession of rooms, all of which are bathed in ocean light. The south front is shaded by a projecting roof plane that is clad in bleached cedar wood, matching the tone of the ceilings. Pavers step down the slope to an infinity pool, which provides a visual link to the ocean far below.
