On September 19, 2017, an earthquake struck Jojutla, Morelos, Mexico, resulting in the destruction of more than 2,600 homes and much of the public infrastructure, including schools, plazas and the central church. Dellekamp Schleich and AGENdA Agencia de Arquitectura rebuilt the Santuario del Senor de Tula, a traditional center with a history of more than five centuries.
The project is developed from a large roof consisting of brick vaults supported by a cast-in-place concrete structure. The structure consists of arches on each side, supported only at the corners. This solution allows air and comfortable light to enter, thus avoiding the use of mechanical air-conditioning systems and excessive artificial lighting energy consumption.
The plan follows the classic typology of the cruciform basilica, but at the same time, it attempts to redefine it through sections. The floor from the atrium to the altar creates a slow separation from the outside world, allowing a relationship of privacy and isolation to be established without losing contact with the garden and natural tropical Spaces.
In this way, the space occupies the type of open church and allows the production of a threshold space, with undefined limits between inside and outside, in its ambiguity, allowing for occupation, diversity of use, and most importantly, the church becoming a defined space.
