Belgian interior architect Frederic Kielemoes has taken an unconventional approach to the typical Belgian beach home in the Midan Penthouse, cultivating warmth with little reference to the sand or the sea. Introducing robust materials that will develop a natural patina over time, the Midan Penthouse redefines coastal living in a pared-down and streamlined setting.
The initial concept for the home revolved around hot rolled steel, akin to the fishing boats at the water. Frederic Kielemoes wanted to start off with a rough material as if it was cut out of the hull of a ship.
Frederic Kielemoes’ Midan Penthouse explores restrained materials and deeply textured finishes, redefining the traditional beach house vernacular. There is a feeling of connectedness throughout the home from the consistent materiality and restricted colour scheme. Cult pieces like the 58/68 Chair by Hans J. Wegner pair with Frederic’s own stools and side tables from his Collection Gilbert, evoking a strong sense of personalisation within the family home.
