Following a successful collaboration with Raf Simons on his Kvadrat capsule collection’s retail unit in 2013, the celebrated Belgian fashion designer returned in 2016 with a second commission; the creation of a new architectural identity for his own brand at Dover Street Market London.
A powerful, clean, brutalist aesthetic dominates the design. The weather-worn, old war bunkers that dot the Belgian coast served as a key source of inspiration; their essence is embodied here by the use of raw concrete. The geometric, textured composition of the exposed concrete elements is contrasted with oversized boxes built in ombré red and green glass produced by artist and designer Germans Ermics and embedded into the display structure.
This theatrical setting becomes the main vehicle to show off the clothes and accessories, sculpturally transforming into shelves, clothing hanging units, partitions or niches for mannequins, as required. The design concept was rolled out to Dover Street Market LA and Beijing two years later, and New York and Tokyo in 2019.
