Nestled into Melbourne’s south east, Bayside Residence combines a known steely Melbourne tonality with a clean contemporary freshness that reflects the newness of the build. Within the walls of the new home, the interior is crafted through a considered approach, curating iconic furniture and lighting elements as new additions, interwoven with an existing collection. Older pieces are then reupholstered and refinished to continue their relevance and ensure their ease of transition with the newer pieces. The home acts as a reflection of the traditional home, while infusing a modern approach. Adrian Preman draws on elements from the past and combines with the present, in bringing the modern home to fruition.

Built by Hometec Builder, the home sits amongst the near-coastal milieu of Sandringham and takes cues from the surrounding context. A light and cool palette emerges as a result and brings soft blues and greens in amongst the otherwhile monochromatic base. Grey and subtly mottled tiles are used throughout to add textural depth, while also adding a warmth underfoot, while timber furniture insertions further add additional pops of warmth within the space. Allowing an engagement with the natural sees space allowed for natural sunlight to enter and animate the home, with a balance created between filling each room with elements, while entrenching a sense of restraint.

Key to the brief was the clear and clever insertion of the owner’s previous furniture collection, which posed its own challenges of integration across distinct styles. While each period of time is usually reflected in the crafted aesthetic created and connects people to times in their lives and associated memories, carrying those objects, artwork and furniture forward and ensuring a continued relevance fronts its own very real obstacle. Through a refinishing approach, older pieces were recovered and restored to ensure they feel deliberately selected to sit alongside the newer pieces, adding an element of history. The result ensures the previous story of the owners is carried from their existing property into the new and that a piece of them and their past is accompanying them in the process.
