JEJU Biotopia N Town House

The use of the space requested by the client is a recreational facility for corporate executives. SUBTEXT hoped that they could spend a complete rest in a place that is not an extension of daily life. The site is a townhouse in the Jeju Biotopia Complex and is adjacent to the Biotopia Ecological Park created within the complex. In addition to the ecological park, ecological nature such as the Supungsuk Museum and Podo Hotel are formed nearby, so you can fully feel the nature of the mountainous region of Jeju Island. The studio wanted to incorporate the geographical characteristics of these spaces into their space. Beyond the concept of a recreational facility, They wanted it to be a place where coming to this place itself becomes a destination. Prior to designing the space, the design team pondered over the definition of rest given by the space.

What is daily life Daily life is a series of habits. The space resembles a house. From the outside, it is like a house. Home is a space full of habits. Remnants of everyday life created by the continuity of life accumulate and extend work and life. Habits are patterns of behavior learned spontaneously in the process of repeating certain behaviors over a long period of time, and fixed response patterns that occur when learned behaviors are repeated. Habits bore us.

Ordinary hotels, where people go for a break from daily life, are exaggerated or exaggerated, creating a situation that is too far from life. Unlike this, SUBTEXT tried to realize a space that resembles daily life and can be filled with rest, escaping from familiar but boring habits.

What real breaks do people want? It looks like a normal space, but it is not to go against spending one's time fully in an extraordinary place. SUBTEXT was decided to empty out the things that make the busy routine of daily life continuous. So, SUBTEXT boldly deleted unnecessary spaces. For example, in the existing building, the area of the floor was widely used as the attic on the second floor, the flower beds that flowed into the interior and were used, the walls filled with storage, the handles necessary for functions, and the lighting.

When you open the large front door and enter, you will first encounter the plantings in the backyard beyond the frame on the wall. The long passageway of the entryway makes you feel the anticipation of an unfamiliar space and the coziness of a home at the same time. The walls of the long hallway are lined with variations of frames. In this space beyond the frame, the newly created landscaping of the private garden and the plantings of the long-established backyard are overlapped and flowed into the interior like a work of art.
