Located in Taichung City, central Taiwan, Asia Museum of Modern Art is Tadao Ando's first architectural design work in Taiwan and the first Tadao Ando Art Museum on campus in the world. In addition to the original collection of Ajou University, Ajou University Museum of Modern Art focuses on the collection of the most representative works of young Asian artists, playing the role of supporting and cultivating young local artists. At the same time, Ajou University Museum of Modern Art will maintain cooperation and exchange with other world famous art museums.
Asia Museum of Modern Art is made of fair-faced concrete and curtain walls, with an indoor area of 1,244 pyeong and an outdoor area of 6,000 pyeong. According to the design of architect Tadao Ando, the equilateral triangle is taken as the basic element of the design. The plane of the equilateral triangle is divided into three floors, and then stacked into countless irregular triangles. The patio space and outdoor platform generated by the staggered translation will be transformed into an area with different functions such as a carving table and an outdoor coffee table.
Due to the geographical conditions of the earthquake zone, the general upright pillars are subverted. The pillars in the museum are all "crooked", and the space and curtain and window view formed by the V-shaped steel frame are all triangular. The cantilevered lower space, supported by a V-shaped steel frame, forms a shaded space like a shophouse, which also serves as an entryway and a resting area facing the square.
In this avant-garde and challenging bold architecture, the exterior is low-key, quiet and pure, while the inner is precise and calm, Tadao Ando strives to let people, art and nature meet and talk here.
