Laura Hammett is a multi-award winning London interior design firm founded in 2008 and managed by Laura Hammett and Aaron. Dedicated domestic and international private clients and real estate developers to provide luxury residential projects. Laura Hammet is an elegant and luxurious design with a strong focus on the quality of interior furnishings and a distinctly modern British style. Low-key, luxurious qualities are often made of high-grade gray for color applications.

Yinji:What do you think of the current luxury design trends?

Laura Hammett:We are not followers of trends as a studio because we like to design homes that will stand the test of time and still feel current in many years to come. However, I do like to keep an eye on what magazines and media are publishing therefore am no doubt picking up on trends naturally. I think luxury design these days is about creating something unique because often our clients are saturated by design, so they want to feel that their home is something special. I think people are moving away from one prescribed “luxury” look and wanting something that feels more personal to them.

Yinji:How do you express the concept of luxury with design? What is true luxury?

Laura Hammett:For us at Laura Hammett luxury design means bespoke pieces combined with the highest quality. Every facet of a project we work on can be custom made to exacting specifications, ensuring that the clients’ needs are realised with unwavering creative expression, with the very finest quality assured. We believe that quality of life can be enhanced through exceptional design, with every detail, material, and element of space creating a luxurious whole, enhancing a property’s value while still retaining a truly personal touch.

Yinji:How do you continue to draw inspiration for design?

Laura Hammett:I find inspiration everywhere, but for design details particularly bars, restaurants, and hotels. I’m a bore to go out with because I photograph everything when I visit places, but thankfully I’ve married a man who is exactly the same. In fact, we bonded on our first date over our appreciation of the design of the tableware in the restaurant. Details are incredibly important to our designs, however for me design is so much about the feeling that a space evokes so I often find myself getting inspiration from a texture or colour combination, or the lighting mood of a space. In my opinion places like Pinterest should be used to articulate your own ideas, rather than a source to find them.

Yinji:What do you think of the performance of color in space, and how do you accomplish it?

Laura Hammett:Overall, our designs tend to focus on a more neutral base pallet, but we do like to use dark rich colours to add some drama in spaces like powder rooms and cinemas. One of my favourite ways to use colour is to do tone on tone which works particularly well in a home cinema because you can go bold with it and have the same colour on the walls, ceilings, floors and upholstery which creates a cocoon effect within the space.

Yinji:How do you define your own design style? What design method do you pursue?

Laura Hammett:My personal style is constantly evolving, and for me that’s what keeps this industry so exciting. I could never be the kind of designer who has one set aesthetic across all their projects. I get my inspiration from really immersing myself in new styles and although the core of our brand aesthetic is recognisable, how those principles are applied to each individual client and location is becoming more and more varied, particularly with our current projects as we’re working across 10 different countries. Experience naturally adds layers to your design aesthetic. Our signature classic contemporary designs complement every architectural style, with a strong identity that draws inspiration from the location, building vernacular and the client’s requirements, interests, and lifestyle.
