Yinterview.036 | Spanish Design Studio Six N. Five

Spain 2021-04-27

Six N. Five is an interior design studio based in Barcelona, Spain, founded in 2014 by founder Ezequiel Pini. The studio's focus on still life visuals and a clean modern aesthetic makes CGI a new medium for creative self-expression. Their refined imaginations, poetic creations, avant-garde minds, and smooth skills have made the studio popular for its one-of-a-kind and pure results.

Yinji: From graphic designer to interior designer, the combination of the two identities, how did you complete the gorgeous transformation? How would you describe your work?
Six N. Five:My work is somewhat peculiar and dicult to describe to people. I would say that I am an art director that studied Graphic Design knowing how to use an incredible tool these days: 3D, which lets me create digital imagery as if they look real.

Yinji: When you first established your studio, how did you get your first client?
Six N. Five:The first was a collaborative project in Buenos Aires, for a friend called Jimena Nahon. She was the director of a magazine called Catalogue, which is no longer on the market, and she had asked us to collaborate with images for the edition called Mermaid, back in 2014. It's worth noting that we were in Buenos Aires and the images didn't have the possibilities of reach and diversification that exist now. Even so, that work was featured in several portals and magazines and made us visible in many places that would not have happened without it.

Yinji:How did you get started in the industry?
Six N. Five:After that period of working in studios, I really felt that I needed to do my own things. I had beautiful experiences working in studios. I met lovely people and learned a lot. But there was a time when I thought that I needed my own space to spread my message and show how I interpret the world. I feel similarities when you live with your parents, and you are looking for some independence, all adults have to do that jump someday.

Yinji:Which keywords would you use to describe your design philosophy?
Six N. Five:I prefer to speak about my style. Is not easy for me to describe our own style, but I could use some words to talk about it: subtle, soft, conceptual, graphical, mostly pastel and sometimes provocative.

Yinji:Your work is full of poetry, what's the source of design inspiration?
Six N. Five:As a designer I consume a lot of images every day, the result of my work is also images, so I try to be up to date in all the design trends happening in the dierent areas.
That’s why I can say that we find inspiration from everywhere. I think most of the things we see every day can be taken. Working with 3D it gives us the big advantage to combine a texture I like, with a shape I love and place them together in a space I would like to be. And this is what I call the magic factor because we can show it with realistic results. But yes, I have a wide collection of visual references and stimuli that help in my everyday job.

Yinji:What do you expect to be the design direction in the future?
Six N. Five:The soul of the studio is tend to be placed in the frontier between art and design. We think they both have similarities, but they are completely dierent, so we want to explore more of that frontier. Our future goal is to make more images that could produce something to the viewer. A feeling, a smile, discomfort or even pleasure. Is not easy but sometimes we reach it, so we need to keep exploring and understanding more about that ect.
