Frédéric Saulou

Furniture Design French 2023-11-02

Through simple but constructed volumes, the immersion of material in space is pure, as if the object had always been there, as if it were part of the walls.

French artist Frederic Saulou was born in 1989 and lives and works in Brittany. Graduated in Space and Environmental Design from the Ecole Superieure des Applied Arts (LISAA) in 2011, and since 2017 he has been the artistic Director of Drugeot Manufacture, a publishing house recognized as a French-made wooden furniture publisher and manufacturer. He is also a lecturer in design at the Ecole Superieure des Applied Arts in Rennes, LISAA.

In 2013,Frederic Saulou founded his workshop, an independent and multidisciplinary design and consulting studio that sees design as a space for research and exchange that allows him to develop a sensitive approach to forms and materials. Experimentation and research take precedence over his work in order to think of new materials, and new USES. This accompanies his daily approach so that each project is thought as a sculpture in its own right between simplicity and technicality. His approach guides him towards a global approach but also unique in his creations creating particular interactions between the user and the object, between crafts and industrial processes.

In 2015, following an artist residency in Anjou, in his native region, Frederic Saulou explored the post-industrial heritage of the local mineral material, forged strong economic and social links between know-how and industrial processes to create the "Domestiquer" project. A project which aims to enhance the territory, people and materials (a) typical of the French historical landscape, on a different scale, that of contemporary creation. The sparing use of resources is clearly evident in a monumental dimension reflecting the idea of the scale of space where habitat and environment mix.
