Othership is a social sauna and ice bath experience that takes guests on an otherworldly journey. Offering guided classes, free flows and socials integrating breathwork, somatic movement and live music, Othership creates an environment where it can be fun to embrace emotions and vulnerability, empowering people to be kind to themselves, embrace a healthy mindset and build community.
Othership called on Futurestudio, led by founding principal Ali McQuaid Mitchell, to develop its overall creative direction for their physical spaces and design interiors that help guests immerse themselves in the experience. Futurestudio drew on the transformative power of nature, purposefully designing Othership as a sanctuary where guests can feel grounded and open to connecting with themselves and others. ”
It’s an honor to design spaces that resonate deeply with people,” says McQuaid Mitchell. “The energy of New York is unparalleled. Contributing to this vibrant city’s spirit through the design of Othership exemplifies why Futurestudio exists: to help shape an uplifting future.”
Othership Flatiron the brand’s first US location, features a spacious 640-square-foot performance sauna, ice baths for up to 16 journeyers in a private cold sanctuary room, and an amphitheater-style tea lounge where guests can gather around a central fireplace for socializing and warm conversation.
Guests begin their journey from the moment they “land” at Othership. A street front entrance draped in a custom-designed textile is the first of several artistic designs throughout the meaningfully crafted space. Cedar paneled walls and natural rocks in the reception area create an immediate sense of respite from Manhattan’s bustling urban streets. Through research and interviews, the design team came to understand the steps it takes for most people to let go of outside distractions and designed the arrival sequence accordingly: by the time guests checkin, reach the change rooms, and lock away their phone, they’ve traveled the interval necessary to feel present.
