On Thursday, April 29, 19:00 Beijing time, Simon Rawlings, a famous British designer, shared his aesthetic thoughts on hotels and top luxury houses through inter India. In this open class, Simon Rawlings will give us a deep analysis of the project's practical experience through the introduction and explanation of the project and design concept. After the course was shared, Simon Rawlings also gave detailed answers to the audience's questions. Please see the live video for details.

David Collins Studio has designed hotels and catering projects all over the world, including the Mandarin Oriental in Doha, Le Méridien in Seoul and the Ritz Carlton in Bangkok. The Michelin three-star restaurant TAK Room, the restaurant The Carriage House in Adare Manor, one of Ireland's most famous resort hotels, and the Kerridge London restaurant hosted by a Michelin-starred chef in London, etc. The projects they create are extremely luxurious, refined and classic.

Yinji:Regarding the color scheme, especially regarding the blue tone design of the Pixel Building, please tell us how you match the colors for different Spaces.
Simon Rawlings:Colour matching is difficult, depending on daylight, artificial lighting and time of day, we do a lot of color testing. First of all, research the combination of color, color is unpredictable, I generally refer to the color from the aspects of fashion design, not only the pursuit of fashion, the past but also the fashion and fashion designer in colors on the bold innovation, fashion life is much shorter than interior design, general interesting colour collocation can attract me, we will go to pursue want to color, When you step into a countryside, a city, a certain area, you immediately know what color to use. The same is true of Gleneagles Hotel. I like unexpected colors, tones and shadows that break the rules.

We recently designed the Continental Hotel for Pacific Place in Hong Kong by Thomas & Middot; For the Hirschwick building, I wanted to use a kind of dark green, but it looked black at night. You have to do first color experiment, understand the color change of the day, we finally selected the other green, bright during the day, a bit like the color of the meter, the frog, in the evening also can maintain colour aesthetic feeling, finally USES vivid color, color need to adopt different methods, we has made a lot of work in colour, customers are only speak about color, It's hard to be neutral.

Yinji:How long does a project take from drafting to completion? What's the timeline like?
Simon Rawlings:The Pixel Tower took 10 years, which is extreme, because it is a skyscraper, and the typical design work is about one year, so one year from design to completion is just right. There's plenty of time to think about perfecting the design. The Gleneagles Hotel was designed very quickly, in stages, in different areas, and each project had its own timeline, so everyone wanted to finish it as soon as possible. My job was to emphasize realism, and it was better to do it all at once than to do it all over again. I always tell you the truth, and when we're working with someone, we want to be able to have an honest discussion about the schedule, and a good relationship makes for a good product.

Yinji:When you're doing projects all over the world, how do you make sure that the design is the way you want it to be?
Simon Rawlings:It was a very interesting challenge, learned a lesson, you can't be there all the time, you have to pick a good partner, who will trust you in your work, there is no need to focus on the designer, not on the design itself, everybody has to know that. Our partners are on the ground, making sure they are trustworthy and accessible. We know all the details before the project starts, and there is little chance of mistakes. We take the time to understand the technical information, to read the technical specifications, to make sure that the finished product is the same as expected. I think the most important thing is the lighting. Strictly control the lighting effect. The lighting consultant knows the right lighting, otherwise the project will be destroyed.

New project in conjunction with the contractor decoration and furniture manufacturers, need making model in advance, if you want to build 50 chairs, first make a perfect model, research details and good function after production, 50 the wrong chair is a big spending, making model at the beginning of the sample is the key, is usually to understand customers and partners.

Yinji:How do you coordinate the lighting to create the atmosphere? Is the material and material of interior decoration more reflected?
Simon Rawlings:When I imagine light, consider not only the layout and color, and create atmosphere, mood lighting, is an indispensable part of conceptual design, lighting consultant with partners in step, constant communication between each other, lighting designer can better realize the design, not highlighted in which personal, the whole process is very complex Involve new technologies, LED lamp is hard to predict, Each lamp has a different color and illumination, so we have to specify the location and light color, so we do a lot of experiments on materials and details, and try to choose decorative lamps.

When designing a restaurant, you need light from different places. Candlelight is very necessary. Candlelight on the table makes your face shine and makes you look better. And the side lights, the worst is all the light from above, to make all the shadow, the lights should be at the top of the photo on the table and food, the key lies in the light of superposition of repair, a set of special testing formula, ensure that all light source position correctly, desk lamp color temperature is normal, shadow transparent, so as to build a good atmosphere.

Yinji:How do you connect at the spatial level? How can emotion and space be connected?
Simon Rawlings:First of all, I want to make clear the relationship between interior design and the building itself, which will have an impact on you when you walk into the building. These retro things make you feel familiar and instantly make you feel comfortable and relaxed. I don't like to create shock design. Make people feel like they don't like it and deny their experience. Create a familiar and comfortable design, this is a hotel, you don't need changing lights, everything is instinctive feeling. The design mix should be comfortable.
